SE Deanery Executive Committee Teleconference
March 13, 2005

Present were:
Dean Amy Massey
Secretary Pat Tagart
St. Peter’s-by-the-Sea, Sitka: Amy Massey, Roberta Modrell
St. Brendan’s, Juneau: Fr. Mark Boesser, Daisy Davenport
Holy Trinity, Juneau: Fr. Wilson Valentine, Mike McDonough, Pat Tagart
St. Michael’s, Haines: Deacon Georgia Giacobbe
Visitors: Gene Smith

We did not have a quorum. A discussion ensued about changing the date of our monthly teleconferences to the 2nd Sunday of the month. Gayle Haines had wanted this, and she has been ill and unable to attend the last two times. Mike commented that we might consider not lowering the number for a quorum per se, but consider some plan for being able to make decisions about important issues.

Amy told us that Fr. Dave would not be with us because his brother-in-law had died unexpectedly. Pat stated that she would send a sympathy card on behalf of the deanery.

Fr. George and Fr. Michael were in Anchorage for the training on racism.

Pat noted that she had spoken with Fr. Wilson, and he has agreed to take the minutes for her at convocation. Amy asked again that everyone get their registrations in as soon as possible, and that congregations come to convocation with the names of their candidates for the St. Anna and St. Simeon Societies.

Pat said that she had sent out e-mail copies of last year’s convocation minutes and revised by-laws so that people could review the minutes before convocation and be prepared to amend or approve them without spending a lot of convocation time on having people read them on the spot.

Amy asked if people had received her e-mail about having two people come from up north to attend our convocation with our deanery paying for their travel here. The response so far had been unanimously in favor of our doing that. Mtr. Dawn had donated air miles as well. Mike asked whether or not this would come out of our travel pool. It would not. He also wondered if we have the money to support this, and we do. Because this was an important decision and we didn’t have a quorum, Amy made the decision to approve having these people visit us with our paying the travel costs for them. It was generally agreed that this would be a good learning experience for everyone involved.

In further discussion about convocation, Amy noted that at present only Hunter Davis is on the list to be assistant dean. Also, there was some discussion about Wrangell being represented at convocation by clergy. Mtr. Paula Sampson and Fr. Ian MacKenzie are present there now as interims. It was unclear whether or not one or both of them would be at convocation.

Also, at convocation, we will celebrate the ordination of Gordon Blue of St. Peter’s. He will become the assistant to Fr. Dave.

May asked for news around the deanery.

Fr. Mark told us that Deacon Bob Stevens preached at two services today at Northern Lights United Church. Gene told us that things were lively at St. Brendan’s. They have done seven weeks of the Via Media. Each session has been preceded by a potluck, followed by a video and discussion with a short form of worship. They are having Lenten services as well. Daisy noted that it seems they have had a lot of medical issues within the congregation lately - Gayle Haines, Roberta Sparks, Fr. Charlie Adams.

Mike reported from Holy Trinity that today the services were split between Mtr. Kathleen and Fr. Wilson since Fr. George is in Anchorage. He mentioned that there is a group studying the book of Ephesians on Thursday nights as well as Evensong services for Lent at the same time. The youth group is meeting on Sunday evenings and has 10-14 youth involved. The men are having Saturday morning breakfasts with discussions. Deacon Georgia told us that on Christmas Eve, they had a women’s group do special music. It was well received, and now they are starting up regularly. Via Media is going well there. She also told us that as far as Skagway is concerned, no one has been there since October as they are closed for the winter and because of the lack of ferry service. Fr. Mark asked Deacon Georgia if she would contact Skagway to see if they wanted an early Easter service, and he asked that she get back to him.

We closed with prayer at 2:48 PM.

Respectfully, Pat Tagart
Secretary Southeast Deanery
